In addition to vision insurances, our office accepts most medical insurances, with exception to HMO’s. In some cases there is a vision plan associated with some HMO’s that will cover a vision exam. Other vision insurances, such as VSP, Eyemed and MES, cover the vision part of your exam, including glasses and/or contacts. If you have any other symptoms like dryness, floaters, redness, allergies, infection, a foreign body, etc. your medical insurance may cover exams outside of your annual eye exam. Please bring in your medical insurance card with you to your exam so that we may inform you of your benefits. Currently, we take Medicare, Blue Shield PPO, Blue Cross PPO, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna and more!
Glaucoma Management
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a potentially blinding eye condition that leads to the loss of the nerves making up the optic nerve in the back of the eye. In most cases, glaucoma is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure. The optic nerve is what takes the information your eye sees to the brain to be processed. When these nerves are lost over time, it causes a constriction in a person’s peripheral vision. This loss is very difficult for the person to detect on their own. This is why it is so important for your eye care professional to know what to look for and monitor your progress on a regular basis. If you have a family history of glaucoma or have been told your eye pressures are high, be sure to mention this when you come in for your eye exam.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)
ARMD is a potentially blinding eye condition where the macula, the retina responsible for our most sharp, central vision, becomes affected. This condition usually affects those who are 50 years of age or older. There are a few risk factors that contribute to this disease, the highest being smoking. Others include a family history of ARMD, being Caucasian and excessive, unprotected sun exposure. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding smoking, exercising, maintaining normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels and incorporating a vitamin regimen may reduce the risk of ARMD advancing. Although the peripheral vision is not affected in this disease, it can severely interfere with one’s quality of vision and therefore, quality of life. Early and intermediate stages of ARMD often start without symptoms and only a comprehensive eye exam can detect ARMD. With age, the risk increases, thus it is important to have yearly comprehensives exams for early detection.
Diabetic and Hypertension Eye Exams
Diabetes and hypertension are both considered diseases of blood vessels. Though they have different processes, the ultimate result of both diseases is leaking vessels. This can cause bleeding in the eye, swelling and can lead to blindness. Early detection is very important in preventing permanent vision loss. This is why eye exams are recommended for some of these patients more often than once a year.
Cataract Co-Management
What are cataracts?
There is a natural lens that is inside our eyes. With time, our lens absorbs UV light from the environment. This causes the lens to change color and shape. As a result, it becomes as though a person is looking through a dirty camera lens and limits the sharpness of vision, even with the best pair of glasses.
The treatment for cataracts is a surgery done by an ophthalmologist. They will replace the cloudy lens inside the eye with a clear implant. We have a select few ophthalmologists we work with to make sure our patients are in good hands. We work very closely with the surgeons in managing the progress before and after the surgery.
LASIK Co-Management
Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis, most commonly known as LASIK, is a surgery performed on eyes to correct near sightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism. Dr. Khan invested in this procedure and is still enjoying her results over 10 years later. We work closely with NVision and Dr. Tooma, who has done over 100,000 procedures. Also, Dr. Qadeer has many years of experience in co-managing LASIK and was even chosen to co-manage patients for a FDA LASIK study. Please make an appointment to see if you are a candidate for LASIK and to get more information to schedule a free consultation with NVision!
